However, a similar city was built by the Romans about 2200 years ago. Where the rich and powerful of Rome went to fulfill their extravagant hobbies. It was called the “Las Vegas” of the Roman aristocracy. <\/p>\n
The name of the city was Baia, located west of Naples. Which is now submerged in the sea. <\/p>\n
By the end of the second century B.C.E., Baia had become a popular destination for the wealthy in Rome. Famous Roman figures such as Cicero, Pliny, Nero, and Caesar celebrated holidays here. It was a resort town in its time. It is also said that after the assassination of Julius Caesar, her lover and beautiful Egyptian queen Cleopatra fled this city to return to her homeland. <\/p>\n
Today, much of Baia is submerged under the sea. In the 1940s, aerial photography first revealed the existence of structures beneath the ocean’s surface. Archaeologists later researched the site and discovered the entire submerged city. Today the site is the largest underwater museum in the world. Thousands of tourists visit the submerged wreckage every year. However, this site is facing threats. The volcano in this area is becoming active again. As a result, there is talk of closing the area for tourists. <\/p>\n
Baia is located in the Flegrian Fields. It is part of a supervolcano and a massive caldera. Numerous small volcanic vents are located within the region. When magma rises in this area, the ground rises, but when it retreats, the ground sinks.
