Kathmandu. WorldLink Communications Limited, a leading internet service provider in Nepal, has launched a digital literacy awareness program at the community level for the first time in Nepal through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program called Worldlink Internet Academy program. <\/p>\n
A total of 392 communities of different communities of Kathmandu Valley have been directly benefited through various training and orientation programs conducted from August 2082 to May 2083. <\/p>\n
Digital technology has become an integral part of today’s lifestyle and a basic necessity. But with its use, risks such as cyber abuse, online fraud, privacy violations, and misinformation are also increasing. The need of the hour is to make children and young people especially aware about safe and responsible digital practices about the internet. <\/p>\n
With the objective of addressing this need, the awareness program has been initiated for the past few years as per the leadership, concept and plan of Anupa Bhandari Jalan, Promoter Shareholder and CSR Director of WorldLink Communications Limited. <\/p>\n
Jalan said that although WorldLink is an internet service provider organization, it has been carrying out the awareness program on digital literacy and safe use of internet targeting school students and community realizing its responsibility to address the challenges and problems related to the area. <\/p>\n
According to him, this awareness program is currently being conducted continuously at the school and community level.<\/p>\n
Under this campaign, a total of 1,490 students from 19 schools were benefitted from this training in coordination with Changunarayan municipality of Bhaktapur in the current fiscal year. After the training, it was felt that such programs should be extended to the community level rather than limited to schools on the basis of the positive feedback received from students, teachers and parents and increasing demand from the community level. <\/p>\n
Taking into account the request of the community and the growing concern towards the Internet risks, WorldLink’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program has been expanded to more community from this fiscal year. The initiative is expected to orient communities towards safe, responsible and efficient use of digital technologies. <\/p>\n
In this context, the content of the training has been studied by the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police and approved for use at the school and community level. “I am confident that this will further strengthen the quality, credibility and effectiveness of the program,” said Bhandari Jalan. <\/p>\n
Therefore, at the community level, the programs conducted by WorldLink’s CSR initiative in collaboration with Women Human Rights Organization, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward No. 9 and 10 and all wards of Tokha Municipality had significant participation from women health volunteers and community members. A total of 12 community training sessions were conducted this year. <\/p>\n
Participants were provided practical knowledge and interaction on responsible internet use, digital literacy, online safety, cyberbullying, personal privacy protection, digital harassment, online fraud and the risk of misinformation. <\/p>\n
Women health volunteers who participated in the program said that they have helped to understand the increasing cyber risk and the benefits of the internet. He said that this training has increased our knowledge regarding digital security and it will be used with more awareness and proper use. He also expressed his commitment to share the information with his family members, friends and other members of the community. <\/p>\n
WorldLink’s corporate social responsibility focuses on digital inclusion, digital literacy, and safe internet usage, and plans to expand such programs to more community in the coming years as well. <\/p>\n
At a time when the number of internet users in Nepal is growing rapidly, WorldLink Internet Academy campaign is seen as a meaningful step towards digital inclusion and building a safer online culture.
