KATHMANDU: Nepal Insurance Authority (NEA) has organized a discussion and interaction program on the challenges and problems seen in the insurance, damage assessment and maintenance of electric vehicles and the ways to solve them at the NEA’s central office, Kupandole on Wednesday.

The program has been organized with the objective of maintaining uniformity in the damage assessment of electric vehicles, identifying the problems and challenges seen in the evaluation and collecting suggestions regarding revision in the existing system of vehicle insurance.

At the programme, Director of Insurance Authority of Nepal Sambha Raj Lamichhane said discussions were underway whether to revise the conventional motor insurance policy or bring a separate electric vehicle insurance policy in the context of the increasing use of electric vehicles in the market.

Director Lamichhane said that suggestions would be sought from all the stakeholders including electric vehicle manufacturers, dealers, transport entrepreneurs, insurers, insurance surveyors and other stakeholders if it is necessary to bring a separate insurance policy related to electric vehicles.

Director Lamichhane urged all concerned to keep accurate data on import, sale, use, damage, maintenance, insurance survey, claims and payment of electric vehicles for risk analysis.

According to Nirmal Adhikari, director of the Nepal Insurance Authority, the program has been organized to seek suggestions from all the stakeholders regarding the revision of the existing motor insurance policy and electric vehicle insurance policy brought by the government.

Director Adhikari urged all to give suggestions on contemporary issues including uniformity in the damage assessment of electric vehicles, clarity in addressing problems and challenges, and de-escalation of electric vehicles.

In the program, NADA Automobiles Association of Nepal and Nepal Automobile Importers and Manufacturers Association presented the current status, problems and challenges of electric vehicles and ways to solve them.

Similarly, a presentation was made on the current status, problems and challenges of the electric vehicle survey from Nepal Surveyors Association and current status, problems and challenges of electric vehicle claim payment on behalf of Nepal Surveyors Association, Nepal.

The participants of the program said that the insurance claims of electric vehicles are higher as compared to conventional vehicles, most of the manufacturers and dealers themselves take the responsibility of maintenance, due to the emphasis on replacing spare parts rather than maintenance, the cost has increased, the risk assessment is not done properly and a separate insurance policy is required for the insurance of electric vehicles.

Similarly, the participants expressed the view that training is necessary for electric vehicle drivers, there are not enough workshops for repair, the depreciation of batteries is high, the government has given subsidies in the import of electric vehicles but has not given subsidies in spare parts, which leads to high maintenance cost, and the policy regarding the use of batteries used in electric vehicles and post-damage management should be brought ।

The program was attended by Director and Deputy Director of Nepal Insurance Authority, NADA Automobiles Association of Nepal, Nepal Automobile Importers and Manufacturers Association, Research Institute of Surveyors in Insurance, Nepal Surveyors Association and Insurance Association of Nepal.

Interaction on Alternative Distribution Systems in the Insurance Sector

KATHMANDU:
