According to rescuers, the occupants of the damaged building were swept away by sea surges of about 1 meter from a nearby beach. <\/p>\n
In the city of General Santos, some buildings have collapsed and major infrastructure has been damaged due to the earthquake. Tsunami damage has been reported in at least one coastal village, according to officials. Waves as small as Indonesia and Palau and southern Japan were measured. <\/p>\n
General Santos is a port city of more than 700,000 people and a regional center for the tuna export industry and other commerce. <\/p>\n
It was the strongest earthquake to hit the Philippines this year. And it was centered on the Sea of Mindanao, the second most populous island in the Philippines. The quake struck about 32 kilometres (20 mi) southwest of the town of Masim in Sarangani province at a depth of 33 kilometres (20 mi). <\/p>\n
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the cancellation of classes and ordered disaster-response agencies to immediately work in the quake-hit provinces. <\/p>\n
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the tsunami threat had largely disappeared about five hours after the quake. Authorities in the Philippines lifted a tsunami warning until mid-afternoon. <\/p>\n
