Top scientists, officials and conservationists from the region have gathered in Kathmandu to participate in a South Asian event on the conservation of endangered mammals.

The five-day ‘Salk Conservation in South Asia’ programme kicked off here on Sunday with an objective of formulating a common action plan for the conservation of saluk for the next 25 years.

The event was jointly organized by IUCIAN’s Salak Expert Group, South Asian Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAVEN) and Greenhood Nepal.

The salak is an animal that lives in a hole in the ground, which is covered with scabs from head to tail. It has a slimy-shaped head and long tongue, relying on ants and termites. Its habitat ranges from flat grasslands to a variety of forests, meadows, and populated areas near human habitation.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Director General of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, Dr. Buddhi Sagar Poudel, said, “Poaching of salak is not limited to any border. Therefore, our conservation efforts have to go beyond the boundaries and be in the same way. Due to many misconceptions and misconceptions, the salk is already one of the most trafficked mammals in the world. This is a warning to all of us. We all need to be vigilant and committed. For that, science should support policy. ‘

Kerry Parker, co-chair of the Salak Expert Group at the IUCN Species Survival Commission, said: “South Asia’s richness is reflected not only in its landscape and culture, but also in its Salaks. There’s still a lot to learn about Salk. Participants in this program will discuss the origins and evolution of Salak to research its novel and mysterious features. ‘

Kumar Poudel, Head of South Asia and Director of Greenhood Nepal, Salac Expert Group, said, “This important program, launched in Nepal at a home of Salak, provides an opportunity to lead the conservation issue of this animal in terms of knowledge and advocacy. This gathering is also very meaningful because this program has been organized with the understanding that it has to rise above geographical boundaries to control and protect its hunting and trafficking. ‘

There are 8 species of salmon found in the world, scattered over limited areas of Asia and Africa. The South Asian salak is home to the black salak (Chinese pangolin) and the tame salak (Indian pangolin). Both of these species are also found in Nepal. All species are threatened by habitat problems and poaching. South Asia is known as a source and transit for its prey.

Kathmandu.
