Congressman Chip Roy has introduced the American White-Collar Worker Jobs Act. The law also aims to eliminate alternative practical training (OPT) programs. OPT allows foreign students to work in the U.S. for a period of time after completing their studies. <\/p>\n
What changes have been proposed in the bill? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Explaining his proposal, Chip Roy said, “The H-1B system has been abused continuously over the last several decades. This visa has prompted employers to marginalize American workers and give preference to foreign workers. Therefore, the current lottery system should be replaced by a system that prioritizes merit and ensures good pay levels. \u2019<\/p>\n This bill proposes a number of changes to the current system. It aims to reduce the maximum duration of H-1B visas from 6 years to two years. It also plans to replace the current lottery-based selection process with a system that prioritizes higher-paid applicants. <\/p>\n Permanent settlement will also be withheld<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n }<\/p>\n Another major proposal in this new bill is to remove the dual purpose provision. Currently, H-1B visa holders can apply for permanent residency while working in the US. Under the new bill, applicants will be required to demonstrate their intention to return to their home country. This would effectively remove the link between visas and green cards. <\/p>\n The new bill proposes to pause the extension for visa holders waiting for their green card applications to be processed. Republican Congresswoman Eli Crane, a co-sponsor of the bill, said the bill aims to put American workers first.
