Kathmandu. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has said that green hydrogen is an important opportunity for building a green future for Nepal. Addressing a workshop on ‘National Review of Initiatives for Green Hydrogen Development in Nepal’ organized by Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) on the occasion of World Environment Day here today, Minister Shrestha said that Nepal has immense potential for green hydrogen production as it has abundant potential for hydropower and other renewable energy. <\/p>\n
He said that the use of green hydrogen is increasing around the world to reduce carbon emissions in sectors such as industry, transport and energy storage. He expressed his view that it would play a significant role in strengthening energy security, enhancing industrial competitiveness and meeting national and international commitments on climate change. <\/p>\n
Minister Shrestha said that Nepal should also utilize this opportunity in the context of developed and developing countries increasing investment in green hydrogen for building green economy. According to him, new possibilities of industrial development, energy diversification and export could be created by producing green hydrogen through the use of clean energy. It will also accelerate energy self-sufficiency and green industrialization, he added. <\/p>\n
He further informed that the government has already implemented Green Hydrogen Policy-2080 and necessary budget has been allocated for running a pilot project for commercial production through the budget for the coming fiscal year. <\/p>\n
The government was committed to research, technology development, investment attraction and expansion of private sector’s participation. Minister Shrestha stressed on the need of effective collaboration among government bodies, development partners, universities, research institutions and private sector for the commercial development of Green Hydrogen. <\/p>\n
Stating that the government has prioritized the formulation of a separate law on renewable energy and energy efficiency, he said works were underway with the target of passing the bill from the current session of the parliament. He expressed the belief that a stronger legal and regulatory base would be created for the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency sector once the law is enacted. <\/p>\n
