Kathmandu.\u00a0 There has been some positive improvement in the credibility and reliability of Nepal’s passports towards the strengthening of passports around the world. According to the latest report of the ‘Henley Passport Index’ made public by London-based ‘Henley and Partners’, Nepal’s passport has been climbed to 97th position in the global rankings. <\/p>\n
Earlier, Nepal was in the 101st position. With the gradual improvement in the credibility of Nepal’s passport in recent period, Nepal has improved its position by four places to 97th position. <\/p>\n
The Henley Passport Index analyses 199 passports and 227 possible destinations (countries and regions) around the world. Its stratification is mainly determined on the basis of pre-visa-free access, effectiveness of international relations and diplomatic initiatives, security and legal compliance, economic and political stability. <\/p>\n
It is based on the number of countries a passport holder can travel to without an advance visa (visa-free) or visa on arrival in the destination country. The strength of the passport is determined by the respective countries’ diplomatic relations, bilateral agreements and reciprocity. The security features of a passport (such as biometric and e-passport technology), the country’s internal security situation, and the legal compliance that citizens take when traveling abroad (the tendency not to stay illegally) increase its credibility. And the economic status and political stability of the countries concerned also encourage other countries to loosen their visa policies. <\/p>\n
In recent years, the Government of Nepal has made the use of electronic passport compulsory and effective, strengthened security system of passport and some countries have facilitated the on-arrival visa facility for Nepali citizens, which has helped Nepal climb from 101st position to 97th position. This reform is expected to add a degree of ease to Nepali travellers internationally and pave the way for strengthening Nepal’s diplomatic credentials. <\/p>\n
Although the improvement to 97th position is a positive development, Nepal’s passport is still in the “vulnerable” category in the context of the South Asian region and the world.
