The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has ordered the immediate recall of noodles of popular brand ‘Current’ from the market after it was found to be of substandard quality.

According to the notice issued by the Department, the noodle samples collected during the market monitoring and inspection were found to be not in compliance with the mandatory quality standard set by the government.

100 grams packet of current noodles in batch number 04A on 2026-02-23 and the shelf life is 12 months. The company has been directed to withdraw its products.

This order has been issued as the ‘Acid Value of Extracted Fat’ in noodles is not found as per the mandatory criteria set by the Government of Nepal.

As per the directive of the Director General, Yashoda Foods has been directed to immediately return all noodles of batch number (04A) from the market as per the provision of Section 38 (2) of the Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081 and not to sell or distribute them as per sub-section (4) of the same section.

Yashodha Foods’ ‘Current’ noodles have aggressively established themselves in the Nepali noodle market in the last few years. According to a recent report by credit rating agencies, Yashoda Foods’ operating turnover grew by 31 per cent to Rs 7.68 billion in the financial year 2081/82. Earlier, in the fiscal year 2080/81, its turnover was Rs 5.86 billion.

Traditionally, Chaudhary Group’s Wai Wai has been dominating the Nepali market with brands like ‘Current’ and ‘2PM’ giving fierce competition. Currently, the market share of the current brand is very strong in the field of Piro noodles. About 12 percent of its total income comes from foreign exports.

In Nepal, the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control and local governments (such as Kathmandu Metropolitan City) carry out market monitoring. However, their performance is not entirely satisfactory.

Monitoring is intensified only after a consumer complains or a major incident occurs. There is a lack of regular and remedial monitoring.

There is a lack of state-of-the-art laboratories at the local level. It takes a long time to get the test report, so the ban notice comes only after the consumer has consumed the substandard product.

Despite the implementation of the new Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081, the action and fines against big houses and companies are very low.

Kathmandu.
