Kathmandu. Thousands of house owners from Kathmandu to major commercial cities in the Tarai Madhes have been directly affected as the campaign for road expansion and implementation of the old demarcation of highways has intensified across the country. <\/p>\n
Demolishing houses, shops and godowns has intensified in Kathmandu, Hetauda, Birgunj, Butwal, Bhairahawa, Bardibas, Rajbiraj, Mirchaiya among other cities as the Department of Roads has started clearing the border on the right and left sides of the road as per the Panchayat-era standard. The market areas along the main road are now in ruins. The scene of squatters being removed from Kathmandu to the ground on the banks of the Bagmati River has highlighted the human suffering. <\/p>\n
Locals claim that “more than seven hundred” structures have been removed in Birgunj alone. After the destruction of the shops in the old market, the traders are forced to do temporary business on the side of the road. <\/p>\n
In Hetauda and Butwal too, decades-old houses are collapsing with the sound of bulldozers. In some places, families have been forced to live under the open sky, the income of shopkeepers has dropped to zero and the market area has become deserted. <\/p>\n
Although the exact data of the amount incurred during the campaign against encroachment for the expansion of the road boundary is still in the process of being collected, the preliminary estimates suggest that the loss of Rs 10 to 3 million per structure will be incurred due to the demolition of small shops and houses and Rs 5 million to Rs 20 million due to the demolition of commercial concrete buildings. Assuming that more than a thousand structures have been affected across the country, the total loss is likely to be more than a billion rupees. <\/p>\n
The size of the loss is very large only in commercial centers like Kathmandu, Birgunj, Bardibas and Butwal. <\/p>\n

Damages caused by a government order or legal action are generally excluded. In order to make an insurance claim, there must be a valid ownership, a valid structure, and an event within the risk insured. <\/p>\n What should a homeowner learn from ? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n This incident has provided some strong but necessary lessons.
