Today, the heat is spreading like a ‘silent killer’ in cities around the world. This problem has become especially serious in the cities of the Global South, i.e. poor countries.

The heat is now disrupting daily life due to fast-growing cities, limited resources, and global warming. People are unable to work, children are unable to go to school, and patients are unable to reach hospitals.

Heat increases the demand for electricity so much that it overwhelms the entire system. Pollution also increases. The effect of urban heat islands in cities can increase the temperature by up to 10 degrees Celsius. This heat is now not only causing heat but also death, unemployment and starvation.

70% of the poor will be affected by heat by 2050

}

A new report from the World Bank has revealed a frightening statistic. By 2050, the number of poor people living in cities facing dangerous heat will increase by 700 percent. This means that in 2050, seven times more people will be affected by heat than the poor who are affected today.

Cities in West Africa and Southeast Asia are the most at risk. Poor families, migrant workers, the elderly and children will be the first victims. If nothing is done now, the heat wave will be more intense and longer. People will die, families will be torn apart and entire cities will come to a standstill.

What happens if nothing is done?

The consequences of not controlling the heat will be disastrous. Businesses will come to a standstill. Schools will be closed. Hospitals will be filled with patients. The heat will increase the demand for electricity, deepening the power crisis. Pollution will increase. Poverty and inequality will increase. People will flee cities.

Domestic and international migration will increase. The economy will suffer a great loss. The World Bank has said that heat is no longer just a weather problem. It will destroy the entire system of cities. If cities do not prepare now, millions will be homeless, starvation will die, and heat-related deaths will become commonplace.

The World Bank’s handbook provides how to deal with dangerous situations

To address this dire situation, the World Bank, in collaboration with UN-Habitat and UNEP, has developed a dedicated handbook, the Handbook on Urban Heat Management in the Global South. The handbook is divided into three parts: a simple summary for policymakers, a technical manual, and a solutions catalogue.

It guides cities on how to assess heat stress, how to prepare, and what solutions to adopt. It outlines simple and cost-effective solutions such as green gardens, shady buildings, passive cooling, and sustainable cooling systems.

Cities at risk if proper steps are not taken now

}

The booklet clearly states that cities should no longer take heat lightly. Ignoring it as a weather problem can lead to the destruction of an entire city. Green infrastructure, rooftop gardens, good city planning, and affordable cooling for the poor are needed.

Scientists are warning that the heat is transforming daily life. If cities don’t take action now, the heat wave will kill millions of poor people by 2050. This World Bank booklet is a final warning to cities. Now is the time for the government, city administration and the people to unite to fight this terrible crisis. Otherwise, cities will turn into a sea of fire in the coming years. Which will make it difficult to breathe. – Agency

Kathmandu.
