Kathmandu. The people had great faith in the new government formed after the general election 2082. Many had expected stability and good governance in the country after the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) came to power with a two-thirds majority. <\/p>\n

As the election held on March 4, 2002 and the new government formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Balendra Shah on March 26, 2008 are almost a month away, the common people are bearing the brunt of inflation. Lower- and middle-class families are finding it difficult to make ends meet as the prices of kitchen essentials and fuel have skyrocketed. <\/p>\n

In the pretext of increasing the price of fuel, artificial prices of food and other consumables have also been created in the market. In particular, the price of edible oil has increased drastically. Traders are also selling old stocks at new prices on the pretext that fuel prices have gone up and the dollar is expensive. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

According to the Nepal Retail Distributors Association, the price of sunflower oil has reached Rs 250 per liter from Rs 220 before the elections.TAG_OPEN_p_23 Similarly, the price of mustard oil and soybean oil has been increased by Rs 20 to Rs 30 per litre. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has hiked the price of petroleum products thrice in a month.TAG_OPEN_p_21 Petrol, diesel and aviation fuel have been hiked thrice each in recent days. This has had a direct impact on transport and public transport fares, which have also pushed up the prices of other commodities. According to the Oil Corporation, the price of crude oil has increased in the international market due to the ongoing tension in the Middle East. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The government has not been able to take effective steps to control this arbitrary price hike in the market.TAG_OPEN_p_20 Although the Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection has occasionally monitored, it has not been enough. According to consumer rights activists, market monitoring has not been effective due to the nexus between big traders and political parties. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

According to the latest data from Nepal Rastra Bank, food inflation has reached around 10 percent.TAG_OPEN_p_19 It has also affected the overall consumer price index. According to economist Pushkar Bajracharya, the rise in inflation is due to a weak government and lack of effective market monitoring. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

“The government has not been able to control the market. The influence of the international market is one aspect, but the government should strictly stop the cartels and artificial inflation in the domestic market,” Bajracharya said. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The biggest challenge to the new government under the leadership of Balendra Shah is to control inflation. The RSP had raised the agenda of good governance and price control in the election. However, within a month of assuming power, the government has been criticized for skyrocketing prices. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

People want to see results rather than government directives. They have demanded that the government should immediately bring relief programs at a time when they are struggling to meet the kitchen expenses. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
