Kathmandu. Amid the Middle East war and rising global tensions, Europe is preparing to take a major strategic step. <\/p>\n
European countries are developing a new security architecture, informally known as European NATO. Notably, the United States has been deliberately excluded from the plan. <\/p>\n
This entire strategy is mainly focused on securing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes. Large parts of the global oil supply pass through this route, but recent wars, missile attacks and maritime threats have severely disrupted shipments. <\/p>\n
Europe believes it will be important to secure this route after the war ends. With this in mind, the UK and France are leading the initiative. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are convening heads of more than 40 countries this week to discuss the new security plan. <\/p>\n
The proposal would create a multinational defense alliance. It will protect ships, remove mines and monitor shipping. Notably, the entire system will operate under European command, not U.S.-led. This change makes this plan unique. <\/p>\n
In fact, this move is not only limited to security, but it also carries a larger political message. Differences between President Donald Trump and European countries have escalated over the recent war in Iran. Many European countries have refused to support US military operations or blockade strategies. <\/p>\n
Europe is now moving towards ‘self-reliant security’. Countries such as Germany, which previously opposed a separate military route, are now backing the initiative. If Germany joins, its mine-clearing capabilities could bolster the campaign. <\/p>\n
The plan has three main objectives. The first is to safely evacuate the stranded ships during the war. Second, remove landmines at sea, and third, develop surveillance and escort systems to ensure safe passage for ships in the future. <\/p>\n
This initiative has been seen to some extent before. Europe, for example, provided security to its ships in the Red Sea under ‘Operation Aspides’. It was independent of the U.S. campaign. Now efforts are being made to implement the same model on a large scale. <\/p>\n
However, this plan faces many challenges. The biggest challenge is whether Iran will approve such an operation. In addition, Europe must ensure that this mission does not lead to any new conflicts.
