From the end of 2025 to the beginning of 2026, there was a horrific cyberattack on government agencies in Mexico. An unidentified man breached the security walls of nine Mexican government bases and a financial institution using artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as cloudcode and GPT-4.1. More than 150 GB of sensitive data was stolen from the attack, revealing the identities of about 195 million people.

The role of AI in the attack: Alone did the team’s work{

Previously, it took a large group of skilled hackers to steal such a large amount of data. But this time, AI made it much easier and faster. According to a report by ‘Gambit Security’, the hacker asked the AI to write more than 5,000 commands.

The attacker deceived Claude by falsely claiming to be a security examiner. Claude wrote about 17,000 lines of complex software code needed to steal the data. When the cloud refused to do anything, the hackers used GPT to plan how to enter the government system and which data to prioritize. Using two different AI systems, the security software could not even identify it as suspicious activity.

Weakness old, speed only new{

}

Interestingly, this attack did not require any new or unfamiliar technology to be successful. Outdated software, weak passwords and network glitches were the main reasons. But AI has accelerated the pace of detection and exploitation of these old vulnerabilities. Normally, AI could do what would take weeks to do in a matter of minutes. As a result, the security personnel did not have time to react.

Impact of AI on Cybersecurity

}

This incident has shown that now due to AI, anyone can carry out big cyber attacks. Security systems are no longer activated only after an incident occurs; For this, a system is needed to monitor the behavior of technology in a microscopic way. Although AI companies claim to have tightened their security policies, hackers are finding new ways to deceive them.

Text and challenge for {

}

This incident in Mexico is a big warning for Nepal. Nepal’s government agencies such as the Inland Revenue Department, the Election Commission and other security agencies are still using outdated technology and weak security systems. In Nepal too, it is necessary to take the following steps immediately to protect personal data:

Timely updates of government websites and software.

Install an automated surveillance system that can detect suspicious activity early on.

To train employees and people in the tech sector on the right and wrong use of AI.

AI has made the job easier, but it has also brought security challenges to the doorstep.

Kathmandu.
