World Bank Report

Kathmandu. The latest World Bank report shows that while the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in developing countries opens the door to economic transformation, it could widen the gap between rich and poor countries. According to the Digital Progress and Trends Report 2025, low-income countries like Nepal need to invest heavily in “infrastructure, data and skills” to reap the benefits of AI.

The report states that the use of generative AI (tools such as ChatGPT) is growing rapidly in middle-income countries. By mid-2025, more than 40 percent of ChatGPT’s total traffic will come from countries like Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. This confirms the interest and receptivity of developing countries in technology.

The report concludes that AI can be a boon for developing countries in the following areas. AI will help streamline government service delivery and reduce corruption, providing small-scale farmers with information about weather and soil, and providing specialist services in remote areas through telemedicine. Apart from this, the report states that it will help the principals and teachers to spend more time on learning by reducing the administrative burden.

The World Bank has also warned of some serious risks posed by AI. Data center capacity is 77 per cent in high-income countries, compared to less than 0.1 per cent in low-income countries. This will increase the monopoly of rich countries in technology.

AI could displace jobs in the service sector and general manufacturing sectors. In the absence of skilled manpower, countries like Nepal may struggle to create new jobs. According to the report, the rate of digital talent exiting from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, and Nigeria is 3-4 times higher than the rate of entry.

The report proposes the concept of ‘4 Cs’ for countries like Nepal to benefit from AI:

{{TAG_OPEN_span_23}Connectivity: Reliable and inexpensive Internet access. The price and accessibility of quality internet is still a big challenge in Nepal.

{{TAG_OPEN_span_22}Comput: Investments in the data centers and cloud computing needed to run AI.

{{TAG_OPEN_span_21}Context (reference): Development of data-based AI models based on Nepali language, culture, and local needs.

Competency: Preparing a workforce ranging from basic digital literacy to expert engineers.

The World Bank concludes that AI is not just a technology but it is the new cornerstone of power and economy. If Nepal does not pay attention to AI policy, investment, and manpower development on time, this technology can push the country further away from the global economy. But with the right policy interventions, it also has the potential to overcome decades-long obstacles to development in one fell swoop.

Kathmandu.
