Nepal&#8217;s insurance landscape is undergoing structural changes. While the traditional life and non-life insurance segments retain a large share of the total insurance revenue, the newly established microinsurance sector continues to register year-on-year growth. That indicates a deeper penetration into rural and low-income demographics. <\/p>\n<p>While the traditional insurance sector has been growing steadily growing at the rate of 12-15 percent, the micro insurance sector has achieved more than 40 percent growth in the insurance premium collection of late. <\/p>\n<p>The entry of seven microinsurance companies (3 life, 4 non-life) has fundamentally changed the domestic insurance market. Non-life micro insurance companies control about 96.63% of the active micro life insurance policies. Source: Nepal Insurance Authority<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite the rapid growth in the number of micro insurers, traditional insurance companies still dominate the market in terms of premiums and sum insured. In life insurance, traditional insurers still control 80.85% of the total life premium. They focus on high insured&#8217;s term, upfront payment and single premium life insurance policies. <\/p>\n<p>Total Market: The insurance premium collected from the sale of traditional insurance policies is more than Rs 2.27 billion. This makes it easier to sell in rural districts. Micro insurers are able to expand even further by using &#8216;product bundling&#8217; (such as mobile recharge or insurance with small cooperative loans) to reach remote areas where traditional agents rarely step in. <\/p>\n<p>According to experts, the &#8220;next phase&#8221; of competition in the micro insurance business will see traditional insurers try to regain the micro insurance market through digital transformation. Micro insurers, meanwhile, will try to pressure regulators to increase their &#8220;insured&#8221; limits to compete with middle-class customers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kathmandu.
