The CBO estimates that U.S. debt could grow by $2.4 trillion annually over the next 10 years and reach $64 trillion by 2036. The U.S. is spending a significant amount of money to pay off the interest on this loan. In the fiscal year 2026, which began on Oct. 1, $25 billion has been spent to pay off the interest of the loan as of February. That’s the second largest amount after Social Security ($678 billion) and Medicare ($478 billion). <\/p>\n
