Kathmandu. Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has resigned from his post, taking moral responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives. <\/p>\n
Thapa submitted his resignation to Vice-President Bishwa Prakash Sharma on Wednesday. Although he resigned, his resignation letter has not been made public. He took the decision ahead of the central committee meeting scheduled for March 6. <\/p>\n
In the election held on March 4, Thapa himself had fielded Rastriya Swatantra Party candidate from Sarlahi-4. He lost to Amresh Kumar Singh by a huge margin. Similarly, other top leaders of the Congress also failed to achieve the expected success in the elections. He said he would resign on moral grounds if the party performed poorly in the elections. <\/p>\n
Thapa was elected the party president in a special general convention held at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu on January 11. The general convention had elected a new central working committee under the leadership of Thapa. Former President Sher Bahadur Deuba and NC leader Purna Bahadur Khadka had filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court, questioning the legitimacy of the general convention and selection of new working committees. The case is still sub judice. <\/p>\n
