KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has reduced the limit of loans issued by banks in the specified sectors.

Banks will be able to lend only 30 percent of the total loans to the directed sectors. Currently, 40 per cent of the total loans should be disbursed to the directed sector, but now only 30 per cent will be disbursed. This has provided relief to the banks that have not been able to meet the stipulated investment.

The government has revised the integrated directive issued to banks and financial institutions on Tuesday to increase the limit of loan to be issued in the agriculture sector to 10 percent. Earlier, there was a provision to disburse 15 percent of the total loan to the agriculture sector by Ashad end, 2085 BS. The government has amended the bill to provide 10 percent loan to the agriculture sector from Poush 2083 BS.

Till now, 40 percent of the total loan should be disbursed in the areas specified by the Rastra Bank, including 15 percent in agriculture, 10 percent in energy and 15 percent in micro, cottage, small and medium enterprises (MSME). However, the central bank, which has added tourism, information technology and domestic raw materials-based industries to the directive loan, has reduced the directive loan to 30 percent.

“From mid-January 2083, at least 10 percent of the loan should be disbursed to the agriculture sector,” the amended provision states. Similarly, the amendment has also made it mandatory to provide 10 percent loan to the energy sector and 15 percent to the MSMEs. Now, 20 percent of the total loan will be disbursed to energy, tourism, MSME, information technology and industries based on domestic raw materials.

The commercial bank, which has disbursed loans more than 10 per cent in the agriculture sector, has given exemption to count the loan of more than 20 per cent in the sectors of energy, MSME, tourism, information technology, among others.

Similarly, the limit of direct loan to development banks should be increased to 20 percent and to finance companies to 15 percent. The development banks will also include loans for agriculture, tourism, energy, information technology, MSMEs up to Rs 30 million and manufacturing industries up to Rs 50 million. In these five areas, development banks will have to provide 20 percent loan and finance companies will have to provide 15 percent loan from mid-January 2083.

Kathmandu.
