The stock market is in the current fiscal year 2082. The first six months of ’83 have shown mixed signs. Although the size of the NEPSE index and market capitalization increased compared to the previous year, the ratio to the gross domestic product (GDP) declined slightly.

According to the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the NEPSE index increased by 1.2 percent to 2641.44 points in mid-January 2082 from 2594.13 points in mid-January 2081. There has also been a positive increase in the total value of the market, i.e., the market capitalization. The market size has increased from Rs 4.302 trillion in mid-January 2081 to Rs 4.435 trillion in Poush 2082.

However, the share of the capital market has shrunk compared to the size of the economy. The market capitalization-to-GDP ratio has come down to 72.62 percent this year from 75.37 percent in the previous year. This indicates that the growth rate of the stock market is somewhat slower than that of the real sector.

Nepal’s stock market is still dominated by banks, financial institutions and insurance companies. The sector accounted for 52.3 percent of the total market capitalization. The attraction of hydropower sector is also increasing in recent years. Its share has reached 15.2 percent.

The number of listed companies has also increased. The number of companies has increased from 267 in December 2081 to 284. Of these, the numerical increase of 997 hydropower companies is remarkable.

The inflow of new capital into the market during the review period is also encouraging. KATHMANDU: The Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) has allowed the public offering of IPO, FPO and right shares worth Rs 21.15 billion.

Similarly, the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has added Rs 48.44 billion worth of securities during the review period. It has a large share of Rs 21.96 billion and right shares of Rs 9.64 billion.

Key Statistical Highlights (as of Poush 2082)

}

Total number of listed shares: 9.22 billion

}

Total Paid Price: Rs. 908.50 billion

Share of the hotel sector: 3.1 percent

}

Production and processing sector: 6.9 percent

Despite the rise in the index and the number of companies in the market, the share of the manufacturing and business sectors is still low at 6.9 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively.
