A news item was published on the website of the Nepal Insurance Authority on Sunday. This news was not a regular seminar, interaction or discussion by the Authority. It may not matter that this was the occasion to lay the foundation stone of a new history of insurance awareness in Nepal’s insurance sector.

Yubaraj Poudel, Director General of the Curriculum Development Center, said that the subject related to insurance education would be included in a balanced manner in the context of revising the curriculum at the school level. He also said that the revised curriculum will be implemented nationwide from the upcoming academic session of 2084 BS after completing all the processes.

The plan to include insurance in the school level curriculum for insurance literacy has been included in the second five-year strategic plan of the authority. The Authority’s strategic plan will take shape if the curriculum development gives appropriate place to the insurance subject in the curriculum keeping in mind the national need.

Now, it is the responsibility of the NRA to suggest insurance-related topics that can be included in the social studies curriculum.

}

The curriculum has changed many times in Nepal’s educational history, but the issues of practical and financial literacy have always been overlooked. The announcement of the inclusion of insurance in the school curriculum from 2084 BS has raised hope. This curriculum not only adds new subjects but also needs to be seen as a long-term foundation for the economic security of the Nepali society.

There is still a narrow mindset in Nepali society to see insurance as an expense or a business of agent’s personal earnings. It is only when students understand the basic principles of insurance from the school level that they develop an awareness of risk management and how to financially mitigate future futures. Understanding the importance of saving and security from an early age makes financial decisions mature. In addition to the social security provided by the state, the importance of personal and family security is established.

Goals and Implementation Challenges of 2084:

The announcement itself is positive, but some serious questions remain for its successful implementation. Are our teachers competent to teach technical subjects like insurance? Without training and clear guidance to teachers, this curriculum can only become a burden.

The Nepal Insurance Authority (NEA) should issue more clear and working procedures to all the insurers and create an environment for the teachers of the designated districts to submit the insurance and provide training to the teachers of the specified districts. By the time the curriculum preparation process is completed, the insurer will be able to prepare educational manpower with the ability to explain insurance in the villages. Otherwise, as stated above, the syllabus will be limited to one subject scoring marks in the annual examination.

Insurance should not be limited to theory but should be based on research by combining it with practical conditions. Students in urban areas will be able to get insurance through digital means. But there is also the challenge of how to make it relevant for students in rural areas.

A decade later:

Director General of the Curriculum Development Center, Poudel, said that if this curriculum is implemented effectively from 2084 BS, then after a decade, we will have a generation knowledgeable about insurance.

The new generation will not have to take loans to pay hospital bills because of the understanding of health insurance. With the awareness of crop insurance, the children of farmers will not have to drop out of education due to the loss of farming. The shortage of skilled manpower in the insurance sector will be eliminated.

Since 2084 BS, students have had the opportunity to study insurance, which means that Nepal’s education system has changed from traditional to professional. This is not just news, but a blueprint for a safe Nepal tomorrow. Its success will depend on the design of the curriculum and the understanding of the teacher.

Kathmandu.
